What is Rehydrate Electrolyte Replacement Drink and how does it work?
Rehydrate Electrolyte Replacement Drink is a sports drink mix that provides efficient rehydration anytime, but especially before, during and after exercise. It has a low glycemic index for reduced insulin response and is isotonic, providing rapid gastric emptying and rapid rehydration. The formula contains a sequential carbohydrate profile for sustained energy. The addition of an essential trace mineral, chromium, aids in proper carbohydrate metabolism. Rehydrate Drink has a balanced 1:1 ratio of sodium and potassium to replenish these ions that are lost in sweat and urine. It supplies calcium and magnesium, vital to muscle physiology and energetics, benefiting both contraction and relaxation phases for reduced cramping and quicker recovery. The antioxidants in the formula help protect against exercise-induced free radical damage. Coenzymes and catalysts for cell energy production optimize the conversion of macronutrients into energy. L-glutamine helps buffer and process lactic acid produced through physical activity, resulting in reduced muscle cramping, and also serves as an energy source for mental function. L-arginine helps support muscle strength and recovery as well as optimizing cardiovascular blood flow.*

How do the different AdvoCare® Metabolic Nutrition Systems compare?
Most people don't eat an ideal diet on a daily basis, and some methods of dieting can actually harm the body. Other individuals such as athletes, can't eat enough to meet their bodies' high demands for peak performance. All three AdvoCare® Metabolic Nutrition Systems (MNS®) provide nutritional support for energy, weight management and wellness in convenient daily strip packs. All three MNS systems contain 3 CorePlex® Multiple Vitamin and Mineral caplets, OmegaPlex® Omega-3 Fatty Acid softgel capsules and ProBiotic Restore™ ULTRA capsules that together provide a wide spectrum of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, probiotics and other nutrients to support overall health, fill in nutritional gaps and provide a foundation for good nutrition.* The variations of Metabolic Nutrition Systems are distinguished by their additional components. MNS Max E (Energy) and MNS Max C (Appetite Control) contain Metabolic Enhancer caplets for support of the body's natural metabolism.* When metabolism is optimized, an individual may experience increased energy, better weight management and improved body functions.* MNS Max E is formulated to maximize energy along with metabolism in support of weight management with Thermo-P caplets.* Max E is intended for persons 18 years and older. MNS Max C is designed to maximize appetite control along with increased energy and metabolism in support of weight management with a Thermo-T caplet and CitriSate (appetite suppressant caplet).* Max C is intended for individuals 18 years and older. Our newest MNS system, MNS Max 3, is formulated to support metabolism, appetite management and energy production with an ActoTherm® SR caplet which uses sustained-release technology, and BioTherm capsules.* In addition, Max 3 provides comprehensive nutrition with the inclusion of Calcium Plus caplets, an Amplify A.T. softgel capsule and an additional OmegaPlex softgel capsule.* Max 3 contains approximately one-half the amount of caffeine contained in MNS Max E and MNS Max C. Max 3 is intended for persons 12 years and older. A kit containing MNS Max 3 is available for individuals who may be seeking extra help with weight management.* In addition to MNS strip pack supplements, the kit includes three flavors of Meal Replacement Shakes as well as AdvoCare Spark® in a variety of flavors. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. What effects do AdvoCare® Meal Replacement Shakes have on blood sugar levels?
The effects of drinking a Chocolate, Berry or Vanilla Meal Replacement Shake on blood sugar levels are presented in the graph below. The results clearly show that the Meal Replacement Shakes have relatively little impact on blood sugar levels as compared to a standard serving of sugar (50 grams). Blood sugar levels on average increased from approximately 88 mg/dL to approximately 96 to 100 mg/dL and returned to baseline within 60 minutes. The average glycemic load for Meal Replacement Shakes is approximately 4 as compared to 50 for glucose. Glycemic load is a determination of the relative effects that a food will have on blood sugar levels, and is determined by dividing the glycemic index by 100 and multiplying by the grams of absorbable carbohydrates in a given portion of food. The effects of taking three Carb-Ease™ capsules 15 minutes before consuming either a Berry or Chocolate Shake are also presented in the graph. Blood sugar levels were not as high as without Carb-Ease and returned to baseline more rapidly when used.

Is the fish oil in OmegaPlex® Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplement pharmaceutical grade?
There is no commonly accepted "pharmaceutical grade" criterion for marine lipids. Since companies use various methods for quality testing and for reporting results, current product labeling is inconsistent across the industry. However, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), comprised of a group of dietary supplement industry manufacturers, has drafted a voluntary monograph that has helped establish testing protocols and stringent standards as indicators of quality omega-3 fatty acid supplements. OmegaPlex is of excellent quality and purity, and the values are consistent with the CRN voluntary monograph values. Furthermore, the marine oils used in OmegaPlex are tested to ensure the absence of heavy metals, pesticides and other potential contaminants.

How does Digest-Ease™ Herbal Supplement help with digestion?
Digest-Ease™ is an all-natural mixture of standardized botanical extracts blended into a whole papaya base. The ingredients in Digest-Ease are formulated to support proper digestion and the efficient absorption of nutrients and botanicals.* It may help the stomach and upper digestive system (small intestine) function normally by balancing digestive enzyme production and stomach acids.* Scientific studies have shown that ginger and curcumin extracts support the activity of lipase, a digestive enzyme. The addition of the proteases, papain and bromelain supports efficient digestion of dietary proteins.* The antioxidant ingredients in Digest-Ease may help protect the delicate lining of the small intestine.* Since the stomach and small intestine are the parts of the digestive tract most involved with the breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients, Digest-Ease may help support healthy digestive function.* Digest-Ease is designed to amplify the benefits of other AdvoCare® supplements. * These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Can you tell me about ProBiotic Restore™ ULTRA? What is the difference between the capsules in the bottle and the capsules in the MNS® strip packs and Herbal Cleanse packets?
Can you tell me about ProBiotic Restore™ ULTRA? What is the difference between the capsules in the bottle and the capsules in the MNS® strip packs and Herbal Cleanse packets? Probiotics are live microorganisms which in adequate amounts help maintain the natural balance of organisms in the intestines, and confer a health benefit on the host. There is excellent scientific support for their ability to aid the digestion and absorption of food and nutrients, support the development and health of the immune system and protect against microorganisms that can cause illness. ProBiotic Restore™ ULTRA is our superior probiotic complex available as a stand-alone product that provides an enhanced probiotic count of six billion colony forming units (CFU). This formula provides a multi-strain complex with seven high potency strains - two species of Bifidobacteria, three species of Lactobacillus, one species of Lactococcus and one Streptococcus species, ensuring full coverage of the entire intestinal tract (both small and large intestines). It has been scientifically demonstrated that multi-strain combinations work better than products containing a single strain. In clinical trials the probiotic complex has been shown to limit the growth of many common pathogenic bacteria species and reduce the incidence of disturbed bowel function.* Larger capsules provided in the stand-alone bottle are appropriate for individuals with frequent gastrointestinal issues or those desiring additional probiotic support. ProBiotic Restore ULTRA capsules are not only available in the stand-alone bottle, but also as components of our Metabolic Nutrition Systems (MNS®) and Herbal Cleanse Metabolic Cleansing System. The smaller capsules in MNS strip packs and Herbal Cleanse packets contain two billion CFU and are formulated to provide exceptional mid-level maintenance. No matter which product is used, the beneficial bacterial strains in ProBiotic Restore ULTRA have validated natural gastric resistance to maximize their survival rate during passage through the stomach's acidic environment.* This allows the probiotic complex to be delivered in optimal amounts to the intestinal tract. Natural bile resistance, together with fructooligosaccharides as probiotic food (feeds the friendly bacteria), optimize colonization once the microorganisms arrive in the intestines. There is no need for refrigeration since the formula is remarkably stable when stored at room temperature. *This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

How does the AdvoCare® Fruit & Fiber Bar compare with an apple?
Per serving, an average, medium-sized apple contains approximately 56% more total sugar and approximately 63 times greater the fructose content than the Fruit & Fiber Bar. The protein content of the Fruit & Fiber Bar is approximately 12 times higher per serving than the apple, while the fat content of the Fruit & Fiber Bar is approximately 10 times higher than the apple (a good thing!). Higher levels of 11 vitamins and 10 minerals are found in the Fruit & Fiber Bar as compared to the average medium-sized apple. Furthermore, when the amounts of these vitamins and minerals are expressed per kilocalorie of energy, they are all present in higher amounts in the Fruit & Fiber Bar as compared to the apple. Moreover, the carbohydrate: protein: fat ratio of the Fruit & Fiber Bar (52:25:23) is much more nutritionally balanced than the apple (95:2:3). In summary, the Fruit & Fiber Bar is an excellent product in comparison with our super food, the apple.

What is the source of the gelatin used in the capsules in AdvoCare ® products?
Gelatin is a protein product produced by partial hydrolysis of collagen derived from pork and cattle products. Softgel capsules, used for OmegaPlex®Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplement and Amplify A.T. Supplement, and hard shell capsules are each made from both pork and beef. The beef raw material sources are pharmaceutical grade limed-bone gelatin obtained from a country where Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE) has not been found or is not expected to exist. The gelatin is processed with a method that meets or exceeds the 1999 European Commission standards. The complex production steps that guarantee the safety of gelatin are an international standard. Gelatin processed in this manner has been proven safe from BSE in scientific studies conducted by the Institute of Animal Health in Edinburgh, Scotland, the U.S. Baltimore Research and Education Foundation and the ID-Lelystad, the Netherlands. Compliance is confirmed by the Gelatin Manufacturers of Europe (GME), based in Brussels, by quality management systems according to ISO 9000 and risk control systems such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP). There is no vegetable source for gelatin. Vegetable gelling agents and vegetable capsules are derived from agar, carrageenan, pectin and other gums and are carbohydrate in nature, not protein.

top^

What is the absorption rate of AdvoCare® supplements?
The absorption rate of various nutrients is dependent upon a number of factors, including: 1) individual metabolism; 2) whether the nutrients are taken with food or on an empty stomach; 3) types of foods ingested; 4) supplement disintegration time; 5) amount of physical activity; 6) medical conditions present; 7) medications taken; 8) time of day the nutrients are consumed; 9) form of the nutrient-how many steps are required for it to be broken down to the form that can be used by the body before absorption can occur; 10) physical form of the product (tablet, capsule, solution, suspension). Disintegration of AdvoCare products meets USP criteria.

If I am allergic to sulfa or sulfite will I be allergic to any ingredients in AdvoCare® products that contain sulfur?
A small percentage of the population experiences an adverse reaction to sulfa drugs, a class of antibiotics more appropriately called sulfonamides, and to sulfites, a group of preservatives. It is a common misconception, however, that people with allergies or intolerances to sulfonamides or to sulfites are "allergic to sulfur". The chemical structure of sulfur is different from the chemical structures of sulfonamides and sulfites. Sulfur is an element, a naturally occurring mineral that is abundant in the human body. It forms part of the structure of several amino acids and vitamins as well as a number of other chemicals present in the body. Most of us consume large amounts of sulfur every day in the protein-rich foods in our diet. We could not survive without sulfur. Sulfur present in AdvoCare® products, such as methylsulfonyl methane (MSM) or the sulfated forms of minerals such as calcium sulfate, is naturally occurring sulfur. These forms of sulfur should not provoke a sulfite or sulfonamide adverse response.* *This information is not intended as a substitute for the recommendation of your physician. How does the FDA regulate dietary supplements?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as part of the Department of Health and Human Services, regulates dietary supplements by several means, although many have the misconception that dietary supplements are not regulated. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) became law in October 1994, and amended the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by establishing new regulations for the labeling and safety of dietary supplements. Although supplements are still regulated as foods, DSHEA enables the FDA to place additional regulations on dietary supplements. DSHEA places the responsibility for ensuring the safety of supplements on the company that manufactures or distributes them. As long as the supplement does not contain a new dietary ingredient (one that was not sold in the United States in a dietary supplement prior to October 15, 1994), pre-market FDA approval is not required. The Federal Trade Commission also participates in monitoring the dietary supplement industry, primarily with regard to the advertising of dietary supplements and corresponding claims. DSHEA enables the FDA to regulate supplement labels and establish requirements for content and placement of information that must appear on labels. Labels must be truthful and not misleading. The FDA specifies the types of claims that may be made on dietary supplement labels and monitors the industry for compliance. Manufacturers are responsible for maintaining adequate evidence to support claims made for their supplements.

top^

How are the manufacturers and laboratories that produce AdvoCare® products regulated?
The manufacturers and laboratories are governed under regulations implemented under Federal and State laws by an assortment of agencies. These agencies include: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) The Department of Commerce The Department of Transportation Environmental Protection Agency (DPA) Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) State and Local Departments of Health State and Local Departments of Environmental Protection Each regulatory body with oversight over manufacturers publishes specific regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) that detail requirements for companies according to the type of products they manufacture. Two main Federal agencies regulating manufacturers of foods and dietary supplements are the FDA who primarily oversees companies under Good Manufacturing Practice and product claims and labeling regulation, and the FTC whose area of oversight concerns product claims, advertising and business practices. All our manufacturers meet or exceed regulations enforced by each agency and compliance is verified by regulatory inspections. In addition, most of these manufacturers are inspected by and are in compliance with either the requirements of outside regulatory bodies such as the Department of Therapeutic Goods in Australia and the Department of Health Canada or third party certifying bodies such as the NSF (National Sanitary Foundation).

What is calcium? How much calcium do we require? What are some AdvoCare® products that contain calcium?
Calcium, the most abundant (average of 1 kg/70 kg body weight) metallic element in the human body, is an essential nutrient required by all body cells for numerous specialized functions. Calcium requirements must be met throughout life. Bones and teeth store 99% of the body's calcium, while blood, muscles, soft tissues and the fluid between body cells account for the remainder. The level in this fluid and blood must be maintained for normal functioning. The body demineralizes bone to maintain blood calcium levels when calcium intake is inadequate. As a principal mineral, calcium maintains a healthy skeleton. In addition, it is required for the following: function of hormones, proteins and enzymes, cell division and movement (involved in body tissue healing), blood vessel function, heart rhythm regulation, blood flow and clotting, nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, secretion of hormones such as insulin (necessary for maintaining blood sugar levels), metabolism, production of bioenergy, lymphatic system and immune function. It may also help in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and body weight. Recent studies show that calcium improves cholesterol levels in individuals undergoing weight loss. Bones continuously undergo remodeling, during which small amounts of bone are removed, followed by deposition of calcium into newly formed bone. Bone breakdown exceeds its formation, resulting in gradual bone loss during the course of normal aging and after menopause in women. Calcium lost everyday through skin, nails, hair, perspiration, urine and feces must be replaced by dietary intake. Bone status is significantly better in individuals with higher intakes of both calcium and magnesium. Adequate blood magnesium levels result in desirable blood calcium levels. This increases the activity of parathyroid hormone, which promotes the beneficial effects of vitamin D on bone health. Vitamin D is key to calcium absorption in the body. To function properly, calcium also requires phosphorus and vitamins A, C, K and niacin (NAD). Dairy products, green leafy vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, mustard and turnip greens), seeds, tofu and cereals contain bioavailable calcium. Spinach and rhubarb possess high amounts of oxalate and phytate which inhibit calcium absorption. Yeast possesses an enzyme which breaks down phytic acid, lowering the phytic acid content of breads and baked goods. No single food can provide all the calcium needs. Those who cannot meet their calcium needs from diet alone can derive additional calcium through supplementation. Since large amounts of calcium may decrease iron absorption it is better not to ingest iron supplements along with calcium supplements. Calcium requirements vary throughout life. Most adults require between 1,000 and 1,500 mg of calcium per day. The average dietary intakes of calcium in the U.S. are much below the adequate intake (AI) recommendation for every age group and for both genders, particularly for females. Excellent sources of calcium include Calcium Plus tablets as well as Meal Replacement Shakes. Eight Calcium Plus tablets provide 100% of the DV for calcium. Meal Replacement Shakes provide 50% of the DV for calcium. Other good sources of calcium include Post-Workout Recovery, Muscle Gain™, AdvoCare® Muscle Fuel, Breakfast Bars, CorePlex®, V16® and Rehydrate

What is vitamin B-12? How much vitamin B-12 do we require? What AdvoCare® products contain vitamin B-12?
The essential water-soluble vitamin, vitamin B-12, is unique among vitamins in containing a metal, cobalt. Therefore, the term cobalamin is applied to denote substances possessing vitamin B-12 activity. The form of vitamin B-12 generally found in nutritional supplements is cyanocobalamin, which is converted to the active form of the vitamin (coenzyme) in the body. A vitamin B-12 deficiency results in anemia, nerve damage low sperm count and reduced energy. Vitamin B-12 aids in maintaining healthy nerve and red blood cells. It facilitates the production of the protein, hemoglobin, which is the oxygen carrying pigment in human red blood cells. The production of DNA, the genetic material, in the body requires vitamin B-12. Vitamin B-12 in food is bound to proteins and is released from the proteins during the process of digestion by the action of hydrochloric acid present in the stomach. A deficiency of vitamin B-12 may occur due to low stomach acid. In humans, a vitamin B12-dependent enzyme facilitates the metabolism of certain amino acids and fatty acids and plays an important role in the production of energy from dietary fats and proteins. Vitamin B-12 and folic acid are required to utilize L-methionine, an essential amino acid, in the body and convert it into an activated form, which modifies fats, hormones, DNA (genes) and proteins, thereby influencing body cell functions. Vitamin B-12 and folic acid are critical for the reconversion of homocysteine, a metabolite of L-methionine, into L-methionine. Inadequate functioning of the enzyme protein responsible for this transformation can lead to the accumulation of homocysteine, which produces undesirable effects on heart health. Most microorganisms, including bacteria and algae, synthesize vitamin B-12, and they constitute the only source of this vitamin. The vitamin B-12 synthesized in microorganisms enters the human food chain through incorporation into foods of animal origin such as fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Fortified breakfast cereals are good sources of vitamin B-12. It is not present in foods from plants, and therefore, supplementation is needed in strict vegetarians. The RDI (Reference Daily Intake) for vitamin B-12 for adults is 6 mcg. Aging and other factors concerned with intestinal function decrease vitamin B-12 absorption. Accordingly, 100-400 mcg of vitamin B-12/day has generally been recommended. Vitamin B-12 deficiency is not uncommon. Excessive levels of folic acid may result in the masking of vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly.
